Simple Electric Switches

Lesson Focus - Demonstrate how electric circuits can be controlled with a simple switch.

Lesson Synopsis - Students will learn about simple circuits and simple switches and working in a team to design a circuit and switch using wires, a bulb, and a battery. Teams will also draw schematics of their circuit and switch.

Age Levels - 8-14.

Objectives
Learn how switches control the flow of electricity.
Learn to draw basic wiring diagrams/schematics.
Learn to predict outcomes and draw conclusions.
Learn about teamwork and working in groups.

Lesson Activities - The Simple Electric Switches activity encourages students to design a simple switch into an electric circuit. Students work in teams to create their design with wires, batteries, a bulb, and a simple switch. Students make predictions about their design and discuss the results in teams and as a class. They also develop a schematic of their electrical diagram. Then student groups compare results and discuss findings.

Anticipated Learner Outcomes - As a result of this activity, students should develop an understanding of:
switches
circuits and current
basic electrical diagrams
making and testing predictions
teamwork
